I haven't blogged in quite a while, well that's because I have been quite busy putting together new quilts. Today, I have a t-shirt quilt that has quite an interesting story.
A t-shirt quilt is like a favorite fairy tale; both have a story to tell. A fairy tale is pure fantasy written and illustrated by a talented and creative author. A t-shirt quilt tells a personal story through the fabric squares so carefully stitched together by a talented and creative quilter. A story unfolds from the pictures and sayings cut from the collection of favorite t-shirts.
Look closely at the picturesque squares in my new t-shirt quilt and you will discover some interesting things about yours truly:
- Ardent and dedicated Cubs fan
- Health and exercise conscious
- Connection with NBC in Chicago
- Someone close to me had breast cancer ( my mother-in-law and sister-in-law)
- Likes to sleep
- Likes to coordinate colors into a pleasing palette
- Butterflies are a favorite theme
- I love living in Arizona
I have been commissioned to do a memory quilt created from a youngster’s baby clothes. So, I have to be absolutely sure how to give this quilt it’s best appearance. So, I embarked on a fusible interfacing quest and initiated an experiment.
This t-shirt quilt was the experimentation project. T-shirt knits need to be stabilized before they are stitched together to give them body and keep them from stretching out of shape. I used several different kinds of fusible interfacing on the squares to determine which one worked best. I wanted a softer, less stiff but stable square. Palmer/Pletsch Perfect Fuse Light, a weft insertion fusible interfacing, got my vote and won the experiment. Lucky for me because it is 60” wide, 3 yards long and easy to press and fuse.
